2012 Nominations Open Until March 31

At the Winter 2012 Board of Directors’ Conference in Williamsburg, Virginia, the Board adopted the Interim Electoral Committee’s Election Plan. This included the creation of At-Large and Chapter Districts. With this adoption of the Election Plan the Society is soliciting nominations for all Officer and Board positions now through March 31, 2012. Details can be found on the public section of admin.nrhs.com.

Inbound and Outbound Convention Excursions

The NRHS is excited to announce that it has received approaval to operate an inbound and outbound excursion to and from our 2012 Convention. Passengers will arrive in Cedar Rapids in style by taking our privately chartered Amtrak special from Chicago to our convention location over today’s Union Pacific Railroad - once the Chicago & North Western. This 230 mile trip covers the route of the famous UP Streamliners, as well as those of CNW trains like the Omahan, Corn King and the Kate Shelley 400.

2012 NRHS Convention Tickets Onsale Now

Tickets for the 2012 NRHS Convention in Cedar Rapids, Iowa are now onsale. A detailed package outlining the convention events, hotel information, terms and conditions and other registration details can be downlaoded here. Online ticket orders are strongly encouraged through the 2012 Convention registration system. Other infomation can be found on the convention section of nrhs.com.

2012 Convention Hotel Information

The NRHS has reserved blocks of rooms at five different hotel properties on the south side of Cedar Rapids. The Clarion is the official headquarters hotel and has the largest block of rooms.

The following hotels are now taking reservations for the 2012 NRHS Convention. Each features a free breakfast starting two hours before the day's first event, free parking, and free internet services. Each hotel is located at the 33rd Avenue exit off of I-380 (Exit #17) on the south side of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Ten NRHS Rail Heritage Grants awarded in 2011

The National Railway Historical Society (NRHS) has announced fourteen grants, totaling $38,500, in its 2011 Railway HeritageGrants competition. Four NRHS chapters and ten other organizations received grants. The grants awarded included one for archival work and projects for preservation of several steam and diesel locomotives and an interurban car, a coach, a dining car, a Big John hopper, and “at the end,” a railcar (caboose), as well as a semaphore and projects related to exhibits. The grants were selected from 35 applications requesting a total of almost $143,500. Evaluation of the grants was undertaken by the NRHS Railway Heritage Grants Committee.
